Polished Concrete Floor FAQs

Is polished concrete slippery

Despite the high gloss, it meets OSHA standards for slip resistance when kept clean and dry

Most structurally sound slabs can be ground and polished, though patching may be required for major cracks

Absolutely. While very popular in commercial spaces, polished concrete is an excellent, modern option for residential garages. It offers a sleek, high-end look and eliminates the concrete dusting that often tracks into your home. However, if your garage floor is heavily pitted from winter road salts, an epoxy or polyaspartic coating might be a better option to hide those imperfections.

Generally, polished concrete is highly cost-effective and often falls within a similar price range as standard epoxy coatings, depending on the level of gloss and aggregate exposure you choose. Because it uses the existing slab rather than applying a thick topical coating, the long-term lifetime cost is significantly lower since it never needs to be stripped or recoated.

During the polishing process, we apply a penetrating densifier and a stain-resistant guard. While the floor is highly resistant to spills and water, it is not 100% stain-proof. We recommend wiping up oil, acidic liquids (like vinegar or battery acid), and harsh chemicals as quickly as possible to prevent them from etching the surface over time.

Most residential and light commercial polishing jobs take between 2 to 4 days. The timeline depends heavily on the square footage, the initial condition of the concrete, and the desired level of shine. The best part? There is no “cure time” for a coating to dry, so the floor is ready for foot and vehicle traffic almost immediately after we finish.

Concrete polishing will not make cracks disappear. We do repair and fill joints and major cracks with a color-matched polyurea filler before polishing, which stabilizes the floor and looks great, but the repairs will still be slightly visible. Many of our clients love this because it adds a natural, industrial character to the floor!
